I Hate MySpace!!!

Well- you read the title... And I usually am not one to use the word hate, for there are only a few things i truly despise. MySpace is one of those things.

Its not that i try to be counter-culture, (i do when its necessary- like the new song by Blackeyed Peas- the one about "lovley lady lumps" i heard, really listened to it, and now no longer listen to pop radio...ever...it all sounds like that... blah)

I hate MySpace because of what it stands for- not the blogs, not the messages and ways to stay connected-

IT IS THE ULTIMATE MASK!!!- you can be whoever the hell you want to be- to everyone- all the time, your phasaad and your carefully edited words painted to make you exactly what will get you accepted.

Perhaps origionality is overrated- many of the users lie about their age, shows hoochy or macho pictures, and talk as if they really are the hottest thang' to ever be. (maybe not quite and i am exaggerating greatly) I dont have a MySpace page. My 14year old sister does and let me tell you how thrilled i am about this; her friend i have known sence they were both in 2d grade also has a page i checked out when lilG... (my sister) showed me. She looks like a prostitute, cute and innocent little girl that i knew, says shes 18 and horny. Someone may as well have thrown a knife into my heart.

It also seems to eat people (everyone has one and many middle and highschoolers spend hours on it) So letts all jump off the bridge! Im game if it makes me popular, or feel popular- oooo then let me journal really intament things so that the whole world can read about my greatly exxagerated middle to upper class american drama.

And really it all comes down to this- PEOPLE ESPECIALLY YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS ARE CRAVING AND ERNESTLY SEEKING FOR INTAMECY. But going about it like this- with guards and masks up, walls around their hearts so that they arnt burned again- and this MySpace Mentality: The cold computer is my filter and my shield- through it i can live my life and friendships without actually risking contact.

DISCLAMER: Much of what i said does not apply to all myspace users- infact i know many people who just really do use it for friends- but think of the principal behind all of it...really...

Go look at some random pages. The kids are being tought how to associate through a sort of instant message, post-it pictures, virtual reality life. Reality is manipulated to look like a cool website where we are comfortable. Guess Im just old...

Well, here's my opinion on the myspace FIASCO incase your are interested:

My definition - For me, myspace is the perfect way to keep in touch with people I don't ever want to talk to.

And thats exactly what I use it for. You will find I have a page, bearing 0 pictures, and I plan to keep it that way. I was thinking I might put up a picture of Buzz. That seems harmless enough, right?

But seriously, I sort of half-a** "keep in touch" with people I really don't actually want to talk to, but every four years I get a wild hair and are curious as to how they are doing....

Whats annoying about myspace is-- the "I'm the life of the cyberparty with my 162,647 friends" attitude...

Whats offensive about myspace is-- the nearly pornographic pictures (mostly of ugly people) who really want to show off what they aint got...

Whats depressing about myspace is--
the obviousness of the american youth's desperation...

Whats convenient about myspace --
you can keep up with large groups of people all at one time without having to send separate emails (say for people out of the country or possibly in the service) instead of writing emails to all their friends and family, they can write one large comment on their page, and the friends and family interested can view it at any time. (You can do the exact same thing with a blog).

So, there's my two cents.

But, my dear, I wanted to tell you this: no matter how much it hurts to see people degrade themselves (and do it consistently and proudly).....you cannot let these things ruin your day. People are stupid and desperate. And they are going to go on being stupid and desperate whether or not you cry yourself to sleep over it.

That was a particularly painful lesson for me...I learned when I was almost exactly your age.

Keep your chin up.

Wow- its funny we should be talking about this now... all hell just broke loose when a concerned parent of one of the youth in our church discovered questionable content on his son's myspace account. Now the youth and parents are going to have a forum discussion about it- and the dangers there in. There have been something like 17 CONVICTED cases of child molestation through myspace! it is dangerous, but funny i still think in many ways the parent is overreacting
